I abide by the principles outlined in the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics. I approach every story with an open mind, aware that I do not know all the facts. I recognize that there may be more than two sides to any story, that their stories may compete, and that it is my job to find the truth, not to parrot their competing claims.
To avoid even the appearance of a conflict, I do not accept payment or gifts from sources or subjects of my coverage, nor do I make donations to political causes or candidates. Aside from voting, I do not engage in political advocacy, including signing petitions, except as it relates to press freedom and government transparency, because I believe journalists have an obligation to encourage these ends.
My writing is my own. I do not use generative artificial intelligence tools to research, write or edit my work. I do use machine learning tools to assist with generating transcripts of interviews, being careful to manually verify the accuracy of each quote I use and the context surrounding it. While I may reevaluate this position as technology progresses, current AI technologies are far too unreliable to meet the exacting standards ethical journalism requires.
